Imagine in 1977, you were an executive type and wanted a powerful luxury car made in Britain, befitting your status, how about the latest offering from British Leyland? The range topping Princess 2200 HLS, with its 110bhp transverse 2.2 litre, six cylinder, twin carb engine, comfortable hydrolastic suspension, luxurious gold velour seats with arm rests to match your 70's sofa at home, now your talking!
Thankfully in one of the more restrained colours available at the time, this Princess still cuts quite a dash having lead a very sheltered entire life in Falmouth, Cornwall!
In the current ownership since 1981 the Princess has always been garaged in a dry lock up.
It was taxed and in use until 1992, when the owner was no longer able to drive for medical reasons, but he started up and drove it out of the garage regularly until about 5 years ago.
Recorded mileage is 58,000.
The bodywork is in remarkable condition, the underside has never been welded and doesn't need it, most of the paintwork just needs a polish, there are some minor areas of micro blistering and a couple of small rust spots, but considering most of these cars rotted out 30 years ago it's condition is amazing!
The gold velour seats have had covers on for at least the last 40 years, when I took them off the seats underneath are clean and virtually unworn. the dash, plastics, widow rubbers etc are all really good.
I put some petrol in, a good battery and cleaned the points and it fired up, a couple of fuel leaks need sorting, but the clutch is free and it moved under its own power. The power steering functioned.
The hydrolastic suspension had dropped about half way while it was sat, I have now pumped it up to the correct height.
There are a few jobs to do, obviously it will need tyres, brakes checking and servicing, engine service etc. The drivers bottom door hinge pin is worn.
The exhaust is blowing at the manifold and the tailpipe has rusted out but the majority of it including the silencers look sound.
I am amazed at the interest the car has sparked since it has been at the workshop, it could quite easily be a show car with some love and attention, or a comfortable, practical mot and tax exempt runabout.
For sale either as is, or I can recommission, service and mot it, ready for use, please call for a chat if you are interested.
